The 1960s famously challenged the status quo of the previous decade. In particular the roles of women were changing at an accelerated pace.

Both feminist and gay liberationist groups believed that people had been required to conform to society's expectations for too long.

Now it was time for the social order, itself, to be confronted and changed.
